Alice was born in Grant City, Missouri to Francis and Rex Friday, November 3, 1932. They moved to Wichita, Kansas where she was Baptised and Confirmed on December 31, 1950, at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She worked many different jobs over her lifetime, but being an artist with many different crafts showcased her talents and skills. Alice loved working with her hands to create things of beauty. She was a talented seamstress - sewing many dresses for weddings and for the family. She decorated cakes for weddings and birthdays - everything had a personal touch to it. She did tole painting and even wheat weaving that was put on the President’s Christmas tree one year. Her love and passion was in floral design. She created all the wedding flowers for all her children and for many other friends and family members. She taught floral design for the Wichita Area Vocational School for over 20 years.
She was a homemaker all her life raising four children. Debbie, Danny, and Robert were from her first marriage to Earl Gerbitz which ended tragically after 12 years of marriage, due to his sudden death in an accident. She remarried years later to Melvin Wyssman and was happily married for 46 years before he passed away in 2013. They had one child together, Linda. Alice and Melvin lived on a farm south of Wichita and raised their children there for over 50 years. All the children were baptised and confirmed at Immanuel and all but one child was married at Immanuel.
After the passing of Melvin, Alice continued living at the farm by herself and enjoyed new activities like going to the casino and sewing bowl cozzies, potato bags, and bottle openers and selling them at the Wichita Flea Market. She loved sharing her sewing talents with everyone, and many of her friends will treasure the items that she gave away to people whom she meet that showed her kindness. She enjoyed making things for others, she showed her love and kindness to so many people.
Alice passed away on July 4, 2023 - many think that she wanted to go out with a bang! She will be remembered for many things but she will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, Aunt, God Mother, and friend. Visitation will be 12:00pm – 2:00pm with Funeral Services starting at 2:00pm, Monday, all at the Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
