Barbara Black-Roe

Barbara Fern (Hales) Black-Roe, retired piano teacher, passed away at the age of 90 on April 12, 2023. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Violet (Ellis) Hales, her daughter Jaci Black, and granddaughter Karen White. She is survived by her husband Donald Roe and her two daughters, Janice (Black) Rhoades and Charla (Black) Smith. Her grandchildren are Christopher, Thomas, and Jocelyn Riehl and Tracy (White) Thomas. She has 6 great-grandchildren.

Barbara was born October 8, 1932 in Wichita, KS and graduated from East High in 1950. She married Doyle Thomas Black on Dec. 14, 1951. They were married 53 years before his passing in 2005. Barbara was his excellent caregiver for 15 years during his illness with ALS. Barbara met Donald Roe at Immanuel Baptist Church and they were married in Nov. 2007.

Barbara began taking piano lessons at age 4 and became the church accompanist at The Baptist Tabernacle in Wichita at age 14. Through the years she loved playing the piano and using her talents whenever and wherever she could. She taught many piano students, organized recitals, was an accompanist in many churches in Wichita as well as to several musicians over her lifetime. These events all gave Barbara great joy.

There will be a viewing at Broadway Mortuary, 1147 S. Broadway, on April 18th, from 5-7pm. The Celebration of Life service will be held on April 19th, 11am, at Country Acres Baptist Church, 8810 W. 10th Street N. in Wichita. Share condolences at www.cozine.com.
