Barbara Smith

Smith, Barbara Ann, 80, of Wichita, KS, passed away Dec. 12, 2017 in Wichita, KS. A Celebration of Life will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 14, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Interment to follow at Kensington Gardens Cemetery. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dr. Martin E. Smith; her children Curtis (Luanne), Stanton (Laurie), Elizabeth Hendricks (Ron); and six grandchildren, Paul, Hannah, Susan, John, Isaac, and Ryan. Barbara was born to Clifford and Blanche Glenn on October 4, 1937 in Sugar City, CO. She graduated from Wellington, KS High School. After graduating from Business School in Colorado, Springs, Barbara relocated to Wichita, KS where she worked as a secretary in an insurance company. Martin and Barbara began married life June 12, 1960. Barbara soon became secretary at the Chamber of Commerce. Barbara and Martin began a family and she stayed home to raise their three children until the oldest was in high school. She re-entered the work force as a secretary for Hamilton Junior High. Later she became secretary in the office of the Director of Secondary Education. Finally, she was secretary to the superintendent of schools for three consecutive superintendents until 1990 when she and Martin simultaneously retired from the Wichita Public Schools to enjoy travel, grandchildren, and leisure.
