Bill Barnard

William Birkby Barnard ("Bill")    June 15, 1948 – September 8, 2026

Bill Barnard, 78, passed away on September 8, 2026, with his sons by his side. 

Born in Shenandoah, Iowa, on June 15, 1948, to the late Robert and Ruthella Barnard, Bill was known for his quiet strength, strong work ethic and unwavering dedication to his family. Throughout his life, Bill faced extraordinary health challenges. Yet anyone who met him would have been hard-pressed to know it. He rarely complained, seldom showed pain, and carried himself with dignity and grace. No matter what life placed in front of him, Bill remained positive, resilient, and determined to make the most of every day. A true master-tinkerer, there was virtually nothing he could not find a fix for. Beyond his mechanical talents, he was also a gifted artist who could sketch or create nearly anything. 

He spent 30 years in leadership at Murphy Tractor & Equipment in Wichita, Kansas, before retiring in 2017. Bill took pride in his work, where he earned the respect of colleagues, customers and friends through his strong work ethic, dependability, and integrity. He believed in doing things the right way and a job well done. 

Following retirement, Bill embraced the opportunity to travel and experience the natural beauty of the western United States. Whether exploring scenic landscapes, visiting parks, or simply enjoying the outdoors, he found joy in nature. Many of his favorite memories were made alongside his siblings, with whom he shared a close bond that remained strong through extended stays, regular phone calls, and FaceTime conversations. 

Bill also found happiness in life's simpler pleasures and enjoyed keeping his mind sharp through puzzles and projects. He loved being outdoors tending flowers, watching birds, or seeing through a successful completion of his project. A true gentleman, he was rarely seen without his signature hat and was always remembered for treating everyone he met with kindness, respect, and a warmth that was unforgettable. 

Above all else, Bill cherished his family. He had an unwavering commitment to his sons, Andy and Nick, and took immense pride in the men they became. He held fond memories of working on trucks alongside his sons and attending K-State football games together. He was a devoted grandfather to Bowen and treasured every opportunity to spend time with his family. His steady presence, caring nature, and consistent values left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him. 

Though he will be deeply missed, Bill's legacy will live forever in the countless lives he touched, the family he loved, and the lifelong memories he leaves behind. 

Bill is survived by his sons, Andy Barnard and fiancée Megan, and Nick Barnard and wife Megan; his grandson, Bowen Barnard; his siblings, Larry Barnard, Luanne Mannon, Mike Barnard (Cassandra McMaster), and Tom Barnard; his nieces, Kelley (Ken), Mollie (Eric), Emily (Elliot), Brooke (Cody), Andrea, Alexis (Devon), and Danielle Caitlin (Justin); his nephews, Steve, Blake (Paige), and Coty; many beloved great nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ruthella Barnard.

A Celebration of Life Reception will be held at Cozine Life Events Center, 11500 E 21st St. N., Wichita, KS 67206, Friday, October 2, 2026 at 10:00 am.
