Carissa L. Long

Carissa Lynn Long (Brickley), known to many as Kris and to her grandchildren as Gigi, was born on March 7, 1954, in Emporia, Kansas, and grew up primarily in Wichita. She built a life defined by love, perseverance, and devotion to her family.

Kris married her high school sweetheart, Marvin, in September 1974 in Potwin, Kansas, beginning a marriage that anchored her life through decades of deep partnership. Together they raised three children—Michael (Laura), Melissa (Tyson), and Matthew (Belinda). Of all the roles she held in her life, the ones she cherished most were wife, mother, and especially Gigi—a name lovingly bestowed by her granddaughter Maryn and worn with immense pride. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy and included Maryn and Boston, children of Michael; Jacob, Layla, and Eliza, lovingly gained through Michael’s marriage to Laura; Judson and Avalon, children of Melissa and Tyson; and Olive, daughter of Matthew. Nothing made her prouder than watching them grow, pursue their goals, and take steps toward their dreams.

Those who knew Kris knew her love for the simple, beautiful things: being outdoors, time near water, tending her yard, caring for her dogs, and decorating for holidays with care and creativity. She had a gift for making spaces feel warm and welcoming. In years past, she was affectionately called Madre or Mamacita - especially when making her much-loved homemade salsa, which family members joked could have been sold if she’d ever wanted to part with it. Travel was one of her greatest pleasures, especially when it meant being with family. Each year since 2013, the family gathered for trips across the country and beyond, from Florida to Puerto Rico, creating memories Kris treasured.

In 2017, Kris was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer of the small intestine. She faced her illness with strength, quiet courage, and determination, never allowing it to define her. Kris hoped to be remembered not for the hardships she faced, but for overcoming them - with resilience, grace, and with the steadfast support of Marvin by her side. She lived a life marked by endurance, devotion, and deep pride in the family she helped build. Kris was preceded in death by her parents, Dixie Boone and Paul Brickley (Doree), and by her siblings, Casey and Patricia. A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In keeping with Kris’s wishes, flowers are not requested. Those who wish to honor her memory may make a donation in her name to either the Wichita Children’s Home, 7271 E. 37th St. N., Wichita, KS 67226, or the Wichita Animal Action League, 1550 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67214.
