Carolyn Preston, 83, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on July 12, 1941, in Neodesha, Kansas, to Edward Moore and Elizabeth (Gudde) Moore, Carolyn's life was a testament to love, compassion, and unwavering dedication.
After her family moved to Wichita, Carolyn pursued her passion for education, earning a bachelor's degree from Sacred Heart College and a master’s degree from Friends University. In 1962, she married Richard Preston, and together they built a life rich in joy, commitment, and service. Carolyn’s 30-year teaching career was marked by her profound impact on the lives of countless students, and her legacy of nurturing and inspiring young minds endures.
Carolyn’s contributions extended beyond the classroom. Her service with the Girl and Boy Scouts of America reflected her deep commitment to guiding and empowering young people. Her leadership in these organizations helped shape the lives of many, instilling in them values of integrity, kindness, and perseverance.
Avid square and round dancers, Carolyn and Richard shared a love for the vibrant community and joyous rhythm of dance. Their shared enthusiasm for dancing was a cherished part of their life together, bringing them and those around them countless moments of happiness.
Carolyn was also a talented quilter, creating beautiful, handcrafted quilts that were not just works of art but warm, comforting gifts for her loved ones. Each stitch was a reflection of her care and creativity, and her quilts will be treasured mementos of her love.Carolyn's family was the cornerstone of her life. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her devoted husband Richard, and her cherished granddaughter Anne Fowler. She leaves behind a loving family who will deeply miss her: her siblings Anne Jesseph and Bernard Moore; her children Carol and Jon Fowler and Richard Preston; and her adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren—Allyson and James Bell (Madilyn and Bradley), Richard Fowler and Dakotah Smith (Wayln and Willa), Sean Preston (Emmalynn), Erin Preston, Craig Fowler, and Ian Fowler.
Carolyn's spirit was one of gentle strength and profound kindness. Her life was a beacon of love and an example of how a caring heart can touch so many lives. She will be remembered for her warm smile, her compassionate teaching, and the endless love she gave to her family and friends.
A Rosary service will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on August 6 at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be said at St. Francis of Assisi Church at 10:30 a.m. on August 7.
