Christy Newport

Christine Lynn Newport, fondly known as Christy, peacefully passed away on August 22, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of faith in Christ, abundant joy and a life lived to the fullest. She was born on November 9, 1968, in Des Moines, Iowa.

After graduating as valedictorian from Jefferson West High School in 1987, Christy pursued her passion for life science at Bethany College. In 1991, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. Her passion for learning led to continuing her education at Wichita State University, where she obtained a master's degree in physical therapy in 1993.

Christy began her professional journey as a physical therapist in 1993. In August 2023, she celebrated her 30-year work anniversary with Ascension Via Christi where she was able to work both full and part-time.  Throughout her career, she also worked part-time for several hospitals and physical therapy clinics and valued the flexibility to spend more time with her family. She cherished the relationships she built with coworkers and patients - touching the lives of many during her remarkable career.

In addition to her years as a physical therapist, Christy also found fulfillment as a Mary Kay consultant. Beginning in 2002, she embraced this opportunity wholeheartedly and rose to the position of director – enjoying earning company cars, trips and events with her Mary Kay community. Her entrepreneurial spirit shined brightly as she empowered others to celebrate their beauty and develop self-confidence.

Family meant the world to Christy. Together, they shared countless treasured memories. They would often gather for family game nights, hike through nature, engage in friendly (but also fierce) sport competitions and share stories that made them laugh.  Recently Christy was blessed with “grandpups” that held a special place in her heart, as she frequently came home with new toys and treats to spoil them.

Christy always made the most of her time here on earth. She found solace in gardening, where she witnessed God’s handiwork firsthand. Christy was known for her sharp mind, often spending hours reading books and immersing herself in puzzles. Her faith played an integral role in shaping the woman she became. As a talented pianist and vocalist, she faithfully served God by playing with the worship team at her church.  She relished each opportunity to worship the Lord and was also involved in several worship teams outside of church.  She was actively involved in women’s ministry, prayer groups, youth and girls' programs at her church – imparting wisdom and guiding young hearts into deeper relationship with Christ.

Throughout her life, Christy accomplished many remarkable feats.  She displayed her dedication to her kids’ education and growth by homeschooling her children into their high school years while co-leading a homeschool co-op.  Beyond academics, she was an accomplished athlete, competing on collegiate tennis and track teams. For many years, her relay team held the 4x800m record at Bethany College. Later in life, Christy and Brian coached their children’s track teams and encouraging young athletes to reach their full potential.

Christy was an exceptional individual who radiated joy. Her vibrant personality lit up every room she entered, and her infectious smile never failed to brighten everyone's day. Friends and family describe her character as joyful, compassionate, generous and Christ-like.

Christy leaves behind an irreplaceable void in the lives of those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her beloved husband, Brian Newport; daughter Allison Schimelpfenig and son-in-law Nolan Schimelpfenig; son Jeremy Newport; daughter Rebecca Newport; mother Maridel Alspaw; mother-in-law Joyce Newport; sister Susan Warner and brother-in-law Kevin Warner; nephew Weston Warner and his wife Laura; niece Whitney Kerr and her husband Jordan; and niece Bethany Knauth and her husband Shane. Christy's father, Russell Alspaw, preceded her in death.

A Celebration of Christy’s life will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Hope Community Church in Andover, Kansas. Friends, family and all those whose lives she touched are invited to join in celebrating her legacy. Hope Community Church is located at 1831 East 21st Street, Andover, KS 67002.

Christy Newport will forever hold a dear place in our hearts for the love she shared, the joy she spread and the compassion she exuded. Her selfless nature and testimony of unwavering faith continue to inspire us all. One Bible verse that shaped Christy’s life is Nehemiah 8:10 “…Do not be grieved, the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
