Clarence Vernon Downing, 92, departed this life on November 11, 2017 at Kansas Masonic Home after a long and courageous journey with vascular dementia. He was born on September 2, 1925 to Ralph and Mary Angle Downing on a farm near Renfrow, Oklahoma. He was raised in the Byron-Amorita Oklahoma area. On March 25, 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, Hazel Jean Cutright. He enjoyed working on the family farm. In 1951 he moved his family to Wichita, Kansas. Clarence was employed with the Wichita Board of Education and Boeing where he retired after 28 1/2 years. During the years at Boeing he was sent to work at Air Force Bases in the United States and Canada. He enjoyed playing cards, games and fishing, in retirement, traveling, gardening, bee keeping and working on projects and maintenance at church building. His greatest enjoyment was sharing time with family and friends. He was a long time member at Emporia Ave. Church of Christ. Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 63 1/2 years; parents; brothers, Francis, Olaf, Tom, Carl; sisters, Leota, Hannah Belle. Those to cherish his memory: children, Trudy Hall and Judy Downing; grandchildren, Jeff (Rhonda) Hall, Jammie (Vickie) Hall; great-grandchildren, Jason (Aimee) Hall, Brandon (Lindsey) Hall, Emily Hall, Nathan (Ashton) Hall; step great-great-grandchildren, Lily, Layla, Lola; sisters, Betty Howard, Marilyn Grissom; many nieces, nephews and friends. He leaves a legacy of love, joy and integrity. A memorial has been established with Research for Alzheimer’s Association, 1820 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67214, or a memorial of your choice.
