Dorothy Wallace

July 2, 1940 — April 22, 2017

Dorothy Ellen Wallace, age 76, passed away quietly on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Wesley Hospital. From her birth, to her peaceful repose, Dorothy had a giant heart of gold open to all those whose path she crossed. Born to Mary Louise and Elmer Vinsant, of Wewoka, Oklahoma on July 2, 1940. Dorothy grew up in the middle of Seminole Co., what was once, the world’s largest oil producing region. A place where several generations of her family lived and made their livelihood. A 1958 graduate of Wewoka High School, Dorothy moved to Oklahoma City and worked for New York Life Insurance, marrying Dan Wallace in 1959, and raised two loving sons. In the Fall of 1960 she lost her only brother Danny in a tragic car accident, while battling a rare blood disorder, that lasted over two and half years. Despite these difficulties, Dorothy’s friends recall her always energetic spirit and fun loving attitude, never letting these storms in life, ever get her down. She was a rabid sports fan, and an accomplished tennis player, who followed the ATP tennis tour daily. She loved college basketball, following the Shockers and Jayhawks, though her passion was college football. She was a Sooner football zealot, and enjoyed watching a variety of teams with family and friends; going to several championships, including the 1983 Cotton Bowl. Active in politics, Dorothy led the Boren Broom Brigade, for then Oklahoma Governor David Boren. As his campaign volunteer coordinator, she was later appointed as a State Tourism Commissioner in 1975. Four years later she moved her family to Wichita. Dorothy became involved in Kansas politics as Bob Stephan’s fund raising manager during his career as Attorney General, as well as other campaigns. An accomplished dancer, pianist, prayer warrior, teacher, story teller, humorist, actor, political advocate, SE football booster, fashionista, chef, and braggart; Dorothy was always anxious to tell any who would listen, about her granddaughters “many” accomplishments, and their “sweet disposition.” As a devout Christian, she was a bible study leader, church co-founder; an advocate for the abused, disadvantaged, and those in need. Above all else, Dorothy Wallace was an amazing mom, loving grandmother, and cherished friend. She lived each day of her life with class and positive intention, a fiery spirit, and an unshakable faith in God! Left to honor Dorothy are her two sons, Jeff of Scottsdale, AZ; Danny, his wife Megan (Grier), granddaughters Katie (Kansas State University), and Molly (University of Oklahoma), all of Wichita. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, her uncle Tom and “Aunt Helen” Shafer (Sroufe), of Wewoka. Services will be held Monday, May 15, 10am, at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament, 124 N Roosevelt, Wichita. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the “Dorothy Wallace Memorial Fund”, established at: Community National Bank,1112 Main St., Winfield, KS 67156.
