Emily Jane Garvey Bonavia passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 5th, with family at her side.
Born December 19th, she was brought home as a Christmas present to her three older siblings, John, Jim, and Ann. Two younger sisters, Julie and Mary, were later added.
She was small in stature but immense in presence—an unforgettable woman whose spirit filled every situation and every page she wrote.
Known for an extremely unique and often enigmatic personality, she carried herself with a rare combination of quiet intensity and disarming candor. Friends and strangers alike quickly learned that she spoke plainly, thought deeply, and lived creatively. She was, above all else, a storyteller.
A gifted creative writer and voracious reader, she shared and kindled her love of words with those around her. Her poetry carried both delicacy and force, and her prose often unfolded like a film scene—rich with atmosphere, eccentric but deeply human characters, and dialogue so alive it seemed overheard rather than invented. Those who read her work often felt as if they had stepped briefly into another world, one shaped by a mind that saw life from unusual and rich angles.
Her love of art extended far beyond the written word. She was an avid collector and devoted supporter of the arts. She collected artworks that filled her home with color and imaginative arrangements. Music also ran through her life. She played the piano with devotion and had tremendous appreciation for a full range of music, from solo musicians to the symphony.
Her life carried her across landscapes both literal and cultural—from ranching communities to major urban centers—yet wherever she lived she found ways to contribute. She cared deeply about the cultural and civic vitality of her communities and worked quietly and effectively to strengthen it.
One of her most enduring contributions was founding the Tallgrass Film Festival, an act that reflected her belief that storytelling—on page, stage, or screen—can bring strangers together and transform a city. What began as a bold idea grew into a cherished celebration of film and creativity, drawing artists and audiences from around the world.
She was also a devoted mother, whose own adventures in the world were matched by her encouragement of her sons Anthony and Nick to explore it fully, supporting their every endeavor. Those closest to her knew both her intensity and her warmth, her mischievous sense of humor, and the fierce loyalty she extended to those she loved.
To many she remained a bit of a mystery—an artist, patron, organizer, writer, and friend whose inner life was as expansive as her outer accomplishments. Yet that mystery was part of her magic. She lived as she wrote: vividly, imaginatively, and on her own terms.
She leaves behind a community enriched by her vision, a festival that continues to celebrate storytelling, and countless people who carry forward the inspiration of her creativity and courage. Her life reminds us that even the smallest figure can cast a long and luminous shadow.
She is survived by her brothers, John (Jinny) Garvey; James (Janie) Garvey; and sisters Ann Garvey and Mary Theroux; sons Anthony (Trisha) Bonavia and Nicholas Bonavia; 5 grandchildren; one niece and 13 nephews; and great-nieces and -nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Julie Sheppard and son, Louis.
