Fred Bellman, a dedicated heavy equipment maintenance professional and talented handyman, passed away on January 3, 2026. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy of service, family, and humor that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Fred had a distinguished 31-year career with the Kansas Army National Guard, where his commitment to duty and maintenance was matched only by his passion for the people he served alongside. After retiring from his civil service role, he continued to engage in the mechanical community, working at several tractor dealerships while traveling across multiple states to support his daughter and her family.
A proud graduate of Wichita West High School in 1962, Fred was actively involved in both football and wrestling, foundational experiences that defined his early years. His educational journey paved the way for a lifetime characterized by curiosity, as he amassed a remarkable knowledge of history which he passionately shared with those around him. Those who engaged him in conversation were often regaled with fascinating stories and detailed accounts of historical events.
Fred’s family will forever remember him for his culinary prowess, especially his homemade pancakes, which were a staple request during family gatherings. His home was not just a gathering place for delicious meals, but also a workshop where his exceptional talent for fixing things came to life. Known for his approachable demeanor and infectious sense of humor, neighbors and friends frequently sought his assistance, knowing he could repair almost anything.
In his personal life, Fred enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife, Sharon Bellman. Together they explored 16 European countries and attended two Tour de France events, creating a treasure trove of memories from their adventures. They also visited 24 states across the U.S., sharing their love of exploration with their family.
Fred was a proud grandfather to Sophie and Samantha Bennett, and he cherished spending time with them, imparting knowledge and sharing stories. He is also survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gretchen and Matthew Bennett, as well as several nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Helen Bellman, whose influence on his life undoubtedly shaped the man he became. Fred's tendency to hold onto treasured items sometimes led him to be described as a hoarder, but these possessions were, in many ways, reflections of his rich life experiences.
Fred Bellman's impact on those around him will be deeply felt and fondly remembered. His contributions to his community, combined with his unwavering love for his family, will serve as a lasting testament to a life well-lived.
Funeral service celebrating Fred's life will be at 10am, Tuesday, January 13, at Broadway Mortuary in Wichita, Kansas. Interment will be at 1:30pm, also on Tuesday, January 13, at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery in Winfield, Kansas.
