Mr. Getachew Gebreyesus, 82, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2026.
He was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he attended St. Joseph High School and later studied public health at Emperor Haile Selassie Public Health College in Gondar. He married the love of his life, Zenebech Tessema, and together they raised four children.
Mr. Gebreyesus worked in Ethiopia’s public health ministry and supported nonprofit organizations across the country. He and his wife helped bring modern medicine to rural hospitals and clinics, improving access to care for many communities.
He was a dependable and hardworking man who loved his family deeply and faced life’s challenges with courage, determination, and grace.
In the 1990s, he moved with his family to the United States and later made Wichita, Kansas, his home for the past 16 years. He remained strong and resilient through many serious health challenges.
Mr. Gebreyesus was preceded in death by his parents and one sibling. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Zenebech Tessema; his four children, Tewodros “Teddy” Getachew (Sarah), Yodit Hylton (Tony), Betelehem “Betty” Tadesse (Daniel), and Rahel “Lili” Days (Tremayne); eight grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
May his memory be eternal, and may God grant you and yours a long life!
