Mr. Getachew Gebreyesus Koricho was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on March 31, 1944. He was the third and youngest child of Gebreyesus Koricho and Mamite Tessema. He grew up in Addis Ababa, where he attended St. Joseph High School, and later studied Public Health at Emperor Haile Selassie Public Health College in Gondar, Ethiopia.
It was in Gondar that Getachew met the love of his life, Sister Zenebech Tessema, who was studying nursing. Together, they built a beautiful life and were blessed with four children—one son and three daughters. Throughout his life, he worked in Ethiopia’s public health ministry and also supported several nonprofit organizations across the country. His work reflected his caring nature and his desire to serve others. He and his wife helped deliver modern medicine to hospitals and clinics in the poorest and most rural regions of the country, positively impacting the health of many.
Getachew was a dependable and hardworking man who loved his family deeply. He had a generous heart, a strong spirit, and a deep appreciation for life. Even in the face of life’s greatest challenges, he met each one with courage, determination, and grace. He was always there when needed, never hesitating to help family and friends and often going the extra mile to lend a hand. He cared for his loved ones faithfully and provided for his family with warmth, kindness, and an easy smile. He truly cherished life and the people who were part of it.
In the 1990s, he moved with his family to the United States and later made Wichita, Kansas, his home for the past 16 years. He was a fighter to the very end, overcoming many serious health challenges throughout his life with remarkable strength. On Sunday morning, May 24, 2026 he passed away peacefully at Wesley Medical Center, with his loving son by his side.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sibling. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 58 years, Zenebech Tessema, and their four children: Tewodros “Teddy” Getachew (Sarah), Yodit Hylton (Tony), Betelehem “Betty” Tadesse (Daniel), and Rahel “Lili” Days (Tremayne). He is also lovingly remembered by his eight grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Share condolences at www.cozine.com.
