Glenn Stockham, Jr.

Glenn Franklin Stockham, Jr. died Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at his home in Wichita, Kansas, from Alzheimer’s disease after surgery for a broken hip following a fall. He was born July 16, 1933, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the oldest of six children born to Glenn Franklin and Violet Woodrow Miller Stockham.

Glenn lived in Hutchinson until he moved with his family to a farm at Lyons when a freshman in high school. He graduated from Lyons High School with the class of 1951. He attended Kansas University and Wichita University before graduating from Emporia State Teachers College.

He was married to Jean M. Edwards from 1955 to 1973. During this marriage he became the father of two daughters, Diane Junelle and Denise Jalaine, while living in Hays, Colby and McPherson.

Glenn served in the U.S. Army two years active duty and four years in the reserves, post Korea, 1955-1961.

Glenn and Patricia Anne Rhea were married June 8, 1974, in McPherson. They moved to Garden City shortly thereafter where Glenn was president of Business and Professional Planning, Inc. Two more daughters were born, Amy Lynn and Lisa Anne.

During Glenn’s nearly sixty-year career as a registered financial planner, he traveled the western half of Kansas. Many farms, businesses and individuals benefited from his knowledge.

He belonged to many insurance related organizations and served on several church and school boards. He was especially proud of serving on the board when Colby Community College was first started and also when the campus was built.

He was a member of the American Legion and First United Methodist Church in Garden City.

After Glenn’s diagnoses of Alzheimer’s, he and Pat sold their beloved farm home north of Garden City and moved to Wichita to be close to family and medical facilities. He remained a “farm boy” at heart.

Glenn will be remembered as a great reader, especially of motivational, sales related and self-improvement books. He always listened to tapes as he traveled. He always carried a bronze medallion coin which stated, “Free to be me” which reminded him, “I AM, I WILL, I CAN” and a red Swiss Army pocket-knife. He loved gadgets and tools. Sometimes saying when reminded he already had a whatever, “but not like THAT one”!

And he loved his daughters.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; Jean; daughter, Diane Hort and brother, James M. Stockham.

He is survived by wife, Patricia; daughters: Amy Stockham, Lisa Stockham and Denise Kellams, all of Wichita; grandchildren: Tyler Hort, Wichita; Travis Hort and wife, Taylor, Lincoln, Nebraska; Timothy Kellams, Denver, Colorado; and Sara Kellams, Wichita; sisters: Jereldene Meyerly and husband, Larry, Tulsa, Oklahoma; Rosalie Ayers and husband, Tom, Nipomo, California; Betty Jones and husband, Dennis, Tulsa, Oklahoma and Marie Wilbur and husband Larry, Lyons, Kansas.

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association of Central and Western Kansas, the Finney Co. Historical Society or the Finney Co. Humane Society.
