J. Diane Haag

J. Diane Haag, a cherished matriarch and beloved member of the Wichita community, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on November 12, 1944, in Memphis, Tennessee, Diane brought warmth, kindness, and an unwavering passion for life to everyone she encountered.

Diane moved to Wichita as a child where she attended Peterson Elementary before graduating from Wichita West High School. She pursued higher education at the University of Kansas and eventually graduated from Wichita State University. Even after dedicating her early career to teaching High School English near Leavenworth, Kansas, Diane never ceased her pursuit of knowledge; after the passing of her husband, Jerry, she earnestly earned a degree in Accounting from Wichita State University, exemplifying her strong character and resilience.

While teaching provided a foundation for her impact, it was her commitment to volunteerism that defined her legacy. Diane immersed herself in the community, tirelessly contributing her time and talents. A devoted member of Delta Gamma's Gamma Upsilon Chapter, she later served on a national Advisory Board, embodying the spirit of sisterhood and uplifting those around her. Her notable involvement with the Junior League of Wichita highlighted her capacity for leadership, culminating in her role as President in the mid-1980s. She inspired countless women, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched.

Diane's love for others extended beyond her community endeavors. She was a dedicated volunteer on several boards, including the Sedgwick County Historical Museum, Ronald McDonald House, Kansas Eye Bank and Corneal Research Center, and the McIlwaine Foundation. Her leadership and compassion were felt by many, affirming her foundational belief in service to others.

Family was at the heart of Diane's existence. She reveled in hosting her loved ones during the Holidays, ensuring that Thanksgiving and Christmas were filled with joy, laughter, and the warmth of togetherness. Her exceptional cooking skills transformed their gatherings into memorable celebrations, with her living room often adorned with a sea of gifts for her children and grandchildren. Diane shared her passion for travel with her family, creating cherished memories on numerous vacations, including cruises in the Caribbean, visits to Disney World, and adventures in Mexico.

But of all the roles Diane embraced—daughter, sister, wife, mother, leader, and friend—none brought her more joy than that of Nana. The birth of her first grandchild, Chandler, in 1995, ignited a new spark in Diane’s life. With each grandchild that followed—Reagan in 2000, Skylar in 2003, and Chloe in 2008—her heart swelled with love and pride.

Chandler, she loved spending time with you, watching your High School football, basketball and baseball games. Cheering you on at every moment. She was so proud of you last year, with all that you were dealing with and told everyone about your engagement to Taylor.

Reagan, I think Nana immediately could sense your quiet confidence, quick wittedness, and ambition. She was so proud of you graduating from KU in three years, and she loved being with you and Ashley at Founders Day in Lawrence in February 2020. There’s no doubt in my mind that the compassion you have for others is something Nana passed on to you She loved the legacy you carry on from her. She was so excited for the future you and Ryan have together.

Skylar, as the third grandchild, it was at this point that Nana started looking up at you – Literally. She was shrinking and you were growing into a lovely young woman. Watching you dance, swim and ability to make others around you feel safe are a gift. You both shared that gift as young teachers and she loved visiting with you and reminiscing on joint experiences.

Chloe, the 4th and final grandchild. We all know the youngest can be the favorite and I know Nana would never admit that, but when you were 6, she was 70. Nana had a credit card and car keys. Rules don’t apply in that arrangement, and it gave her so much joy! Nana wants you to continue following your passion. Whether it’s debate, art or a newfound skill. Give it everything you’ve got and create your own success.

Diane's vibrant spirit, characterized by her loyalty, devotion, humility, and grace, has left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She had an adventurous soul that flourished during summers spent at the family cabin in Winter Park, where she embraced the mountains and tranquility of nature while creating bonds with neighbors and exploring the great outdoors.

Diane is survived by her loving daughter, Ashley Cooper (Doug), her son, Brandon Haag (Kim), and her cherished grandchildren: Chandler Miranda (Taylor), Reagan Jones, Skylar Haag, and Chloe Haag. She is also survived by her brother, Martin “Hank” Weirauch. Her legacy of love, kindness, and service will forever resonate within them and within the Wichita community she nurtured with her vibrant spirit.

Her family takes solace in the beautiful tapestry of memories that Diane wove throughout her life, ensuring that her legacy will shine brightly for generations to come.
