James Menehan, MD

James Menehan, MD, a beloved pediatrician, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on June 26, 2025, in Wichita, Kansas, at the age of 99. He was born on February 28, 1926, in Lawrence, Kansas, and his life was marked by service, love, and an unwavering commitment to those around him.

Dr. Menehan spent 30 years as a treasured pediatrician at the Wichita Clinic, where his easy smile and melodic humming brought comfort to countless children and their families. Prior to college, Jim enlisted in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1946. He then attended and graduated from the University of Kansas where he was a member of Delta Chi Fraternity. After earning his medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical School in 1953, he began his residency at Buffalo, NY’s Children’s Hospital before returning to Wichita to establish a distinguished practice in pediatrics. He went on to serve as the medical director for Health Care Plus, which later became Equicor, demonstrating his commitment to healthcare beyond the clinic walls.

Jim was not only an esteemed medical professional but also deeply involved in his community and church. As an elder in his church, he made a positive impact on those around him. Alongside his late wife Betty Ann Menehan, he cherished a wide network of friends. Together, they enjoyed vacations, played bridge, and engaged in tennis and golf games. His love for music manifested in annual family Christmas Carol sing-alongs, where he would have song sheets prepared for everyone to join in, and his passion for classic tunes by Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra never waned.

Jim's spirit extended further into community service; he and Betty dedicated many years delivering Meals on Wheels throughout Wichita. After retiring, Jim volunteered at Wesley Hospital, where his friendly demeanor and genuine interest in people allowed him to connect with patients, often prompting them to share their life stories during transport. This gift of connection brought warmth not only to patients but also to the healthcare staff and other residents.

His greatest pride stemmed from his remarkable 68-year marriage to Betty Ann. Together, they faced the trials and joys of life, and their bond remained strong until her passing. Jim carried Betty's memory with him until his final days, finding solace in the love they shared, particularly during her struggles with Alzheimer’s. The couple's daughters—Kelsey Menehan of St. Paul, Minnesota; Melissa (Van) Abel of Wichita, Kansas; and Devon (Jon) Kirkpatrick of Overland Park, Kansas—are a testament to their partnership, each embodying their parents' values and strength.

In addition to his daughters, Jim leaves behind a proud legacy, including four grandchildren: Sam (Mischia) Kirkpatrick, Brian (Jackie) Kirkpatrick, Andrea (Adam) Powell, and David (Kendra) Abel, alongside his great-grandchildren Galilee, Revere, and Jane Abel; Inez and Maddie Powell; and Finnegan and Miller Kirkpatrick.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Menehan. He is also preceded by his sisters, Madeline Ainsworth, Jo Ellen Menehan, and Judy (Wayne) Sheets; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Lois and Johnny Peterson and Jim Bartel.

His family brought immense joy to his life, especially as he cheered for his grandsons at football games, baseball games, and swim meets. After growing up with only sisters, and raising 3 daughters, having 3 grandsons was sure fun for him! Jim also had a special bond with his granddaughter Andrea – the apple of his eye. When she became an engineer, she made him exceptionally proud.

He often reflected on how his love for golf and tennis contributed to his longevity, continuing to play competitively into his 80s. On his 99th birthday great granddaughter Galilee said, “Pop you are the oldest person I know”. At that time, the family remarked that he was surely the oldest person any of them knew!

As Jim transitioned to the care of Catholic Care Center, his family observed the tender affection he inspired in both staff and residents. Even as his health declined, his melodic tunes and endearing personality remained ingrained in their hearts. He was ready to reunite with Betty, who had brought light into his life, even until the very end. Just three days before passing, he conveyed to daughter Devon, "it has been the pleasure of my life to have been the dad of you girls," a message that echoes the love he held for his family.

He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and will be remembered for his selflessness, compassion, and the rich legacy he leaves behind.
