Kay Atterbery

Kathryn Elaine Atterbery, known to all as Kay Atterbery, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on September 20, 1955, Kay’s life was defined by her boundless generosity, unwavering love for family and friends, and an open heart that drew people in wherever she went.

Kay was a consummate host, whose home was always warm with welcome and whose table was always set for one more. Her kitchen, a place of laughter and the comforting aroma of homemade meals, became a gathering place for those she loved and any who happened upon her door. Whether you were family, a lifelong friend, or someone she’d only just met, you quickly understood that Kay’s embrace was sincere and her friendship a gift.

One of Kay’s greatest joys was traveling to visit loved ones. No distance was ever too far if it meant being with family and friends scattered across the country. She deeply cherished holiday gatherings and weekend visits, treasuring every opportunity to create lasting memories. On these journeys, Kay formed lifelong friendships and collected stories that became woven into the fabric of her life and the lives of those around her. For her, it was never about the miles, but the people waiting at the end.

Kay’s life was also marked by her unfailing resilience and dedication to making a positive impact, even in the face of personal tragedy. After the heartbreaking loss of her beloved son Dusty, Kay transformed her grief into a mission of compassion and advocacy. Volunteering with DUI of KS, she shared her story on panels with those convicted of DUI offenses, courageously speaking about the painful consequences that drinking, using drugs, and driving can bring. Through this selfless work, Kay made a difference in countless lives, hoping to prevent future heartbreak for other families.

Kay is survived by her devoted husband, Philip; her loving sisters, Nancy and AnnaMarie; nephews, Ryan and Tony DiCaprio; her daughters, Sharon Henley, Cece, and Drexa; her sons, Stephen, William, AJ, and JD; as well as her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also remembered fondly by her extended family, and friends whose lives she brightened with her kindness and warmth.

She is preceded in death by her mother, her brother Will, and Dick DiCaprio; and her dear sons EJ and Dusty.

Kay also had an unbelievable love for all of her fur babies, and all the ones who crossed over the rainbow bridge, and her baby, Darlin, who is missing her dearly.

Kay’s warmth and dedication to family left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her legacy endures in the memories shared around her table, the journeys taken in her company, and the lives touched through her compassion and advocacy. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
