Michael L. Schwemmer

Michael Lee Schwemmer, 81, passed away early Monday morning, June 29, 2026. He was born on February 16, 1945, in Marion, Kansas. After he completed high school, he moved with his parents to Wichita, Kansas, where his father began working for the Kansas Highway Department as a driving examiner.

Mike was a proud graduate of Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas, where he attended on a basketball scholarship and earned his bachelor’s degree. His dedication, perseverance, and love of sports remained a lifelong part of who he was.

Mike honorably served his country in the United States Army, including service in Vietnam. His military service ended with an honorable discharge following a training accident, but his commitment to serving others continued throughout his life.

Over the years, Mike built a varied and meaningful career. In his earlier years he moved to Yuma, Arizona to manage an organization helping underprivileged kids, he managed a car wash also in Yuma, worked as a substitute teacher in Independence, Kansas, and ultimately retired from the United States Postal Service in Wichita at age 64.

Mike was known for his generosity, kindness, and willingness to help anyone—whether they were family, friends, strangers, or animals in need. His compassion for animals was especially evident, and he spent much of his life caring about their well-being and helping whenever and however he could.

He loved watching all kinds of sports and especially cherished the time he spent hot air ballooning with his wife, Becky, and his son, Kasey, whom he loved to brag about as his favorite pilot to anyone within earshot. Mike also proudly wore various pilot jackets gifted to him by Kasey and used them as conversation starters whenever possible. Whether in a social setting or in the care of new acquaintances he would always make sure to tell everyone how much he loved and adored his wife, Becky, and how much she did for and meant to him. Those moments created many memories that will be treasured forever.

Mike had a unique sense of humor and a way of making people smile, which was always his main goal. One of his favorite sayings, often delivered with a grin when someone asked for help or teased him with a question, was: “That’ll cost ya a nickel.” It was a small phrase that captured his playful spirit and the warmth he brought to those around him.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Becky Schwemmer; his son, Kasey Schwemmer; and his brother, Jerry Schwemmer. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, humor, service, and love that will continue through all who knew him.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Broadway Mortuary by Cozine Memorial Group, 1147 S Broadway, Wichita, KS 67211.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, July 6, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Broadway Mortuary by Cozine Memorial Group.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mike’s memory to LAPP (a nonprofit and no-kill animal shelter) or to an animal rescue organization of your choice.
