Miyoko (Miko) Akamine Hankey, age 84 of Wichita, KS passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, June 1, 2026, surrounded by her immediate family. Miyoko was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, as well as her parents Kamata and Kama Akamine and three siblings: Kiyo Nakama, Mitsumori Akamine and Mitsuo Akamine. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Renee and Theodore Kroskey, grandchildren; Skye Kroskey and Nicholas Kroskey and her faithful companion dog Lulu Hankey.
Miyoko was born on March 13, 1942, in Haebaru-son, Okinawa Japan. She was the youngest of four children, having one sister and two brothers. Raised in Okinawa, she eventually went to college in Tokyo, Japan. She returned to Okinawa to open a successful School of Fashion Design, which she owned in partnership with a close friend. There she taught the art of dressmaking and designed/crafted custom clothing for the local community serving extensive clientele of nearby military families. She was also involved and certified in flower arrangement, that she had studied extensively.
Miyoko had a very graceful, independent, bold spirit and on April 16, 1970, she took a leap of faith and married Raymond, who was stationed in Okinawa with the U.S. Army. Shortly after their marriage, they were stationed in Minnesota and then transferred to Kaiserslautern, Germany for 4 years. In 1975, their military orders took them to El Paso, TX, where she lived the greater part of her adult life as a beloved wife, mother, homemaker and adult foster care provider in her home. In 2017, wanting to be closer to her family and grandchildren, they moved to Wichita, KS, which was a true blessing! Miyoko was able to see her grandchildren grow up and spend time with them, which gave her much joy. Her family was of utmost importance, and her nature was to always take care of those around her with greatest care. Miyoko had an intuitive way about her and could always feel the need of others. She lived her life with the simple notion of kindness, honesty and loyalty. Her love of gardening and flowers brought beauty to her home daily. Her beautiful soul will be missed so dearly but will live on in our hearts, as we embrace her words to make a "happy life", not necessarily made of things or money, but of experiences, moments and closeness with those you love!
