Neva Lou Riley, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and dedicated member of her community, passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026, in Olathe, Kansas. Born on August 7, 1929, in Newton, KS, Neva's life was marked by her unwavering commitment to her faith, family, and service to others.
A lifelong resident of Kansas, Neva graduated from Newton High School in 1948. She cherished her role as a homemaker while raising her four children, finding joy in creating a loving and nurturing environment. In the early 1960s, she briefly applied her fine skills as a seamstress at Guerdon Industries, a craft she excelled in throughout her life. Beyond her talents with needle and thread, Neva was well known for cutting her family’s hair and generously providing free haircuts to friends and church members for many years.
Neva’s devotion extended into her professional life when she began driving a school bus for USD 373 in Newton, Kansas. Starting when her youngest was in fifth grade, she embraced the early morning country routes and the responsibility of safely transporting children, including special education routes, for an impressive 38 years. Even after her own children completed school, she continued this work until retiring at the age of 80. Her dedication was a true testament to her caring spirit, and she was a familiar and beloved figure in the Newton community.
Faith was central to Neva's life. She was a devout follower of Jesus Christ and a lifelong member of The Church of the Brethren in Newton, KS, having joined as a member on the Cradle Roll. Neva served her church faithfully in numerous capacities, including women's ministries, Sunday school teaching, and as a Board member. Her generosity further extended to the community through her involvement with the community garden at the Brethren Church and by preparing special meals for the monthly basket dinners, nourishing many with love and care.
Known for her culinary talents, Neva was an excellent cook who delighted in preparing special meals for family gatherings and holidays. Her kitchen was often filled with the aromas of favorites such as fried chicken with mashed potatoes, beef pot roast, pork roasts, and meatloaf. Her children and grandchildren especially treasured the special cakes she made for birthdays, adding sweetness and warmth to every celebration.
Alongside her many talents and commitments, Neva enjoyed collecting owls of all kinds—jewelry, figurines, and various other items—a hobby that brought her personal joy throughout her life.
Neva was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Lillian Rodgers; her husband, Charles W. Riley; her son, Charles E. Riley; and her grandson, Eric B'Hymer.
She is lovingly remembered and survived by her daughter, Brenda Claassen; her sons Mark Riley and his wife Cynthia, and Brad Riley and his wife Rhonda; her grandchildren Jennifer Pittman and her husband Mike, Nathan Riley, Jason Riley, Michaela Karr and her husband Olin, Corbin Riley and his wife Miranda, Brooke Jeffcoat and her husband Jonathan, and Matthew Riley; and her great-grandchildren Samantha Pittman, Taryn Pittman, Sasha Riley, Emma B'Hymer, Maddie B'Hymer, Cassidy Karr, Wyatt Karr, Savannah Karr, Lucy Jeffcoat, and Audrey Jeffcoat.
A Funeral Service to honor Neva’s richly lived life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at The Goddard Church, located at 300 N. Cedar St., Goddard, KS. Following the service, a Graveside Service will take place at Restlawn Cemetery, 4619 US 50, Newton, KS, at 2:00 p.m.
