Born on June 30, 1934, in Bazaar, Kansas, Oliver was one of the nine children born to Seaf and Irene (Haberer) Burton. He graduated from North High School in Wichita in 1952 and went on to serve his country with honor as a Military Police officer in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. His service included over a year stationed in Frankfurt, Germany.
In 1964, Oliver married the love of his life, Ruth Ann. Their marriage of sixty years was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together they adopted their son, Jeffrey Scott Burton, in 1974 – a moment that brought immense joy and purpose to their lives.
Professionally, Oliver built a successful career with Farmers Insurance Group. From 1957 until his retirement in 2009, he operated his own insurance agency. Over the decades he earned numerous awards recognizing both his business acumen and commitment to service.
Oliver was known for his quiet strength and gentle demeanor. He had sharp wit and a sarcastic sense of humor that endeared him to those around him. A favorite uncle among many nieces and nephews – some even named after him – he held a special place in their hearts of his extended family.
A man of many passions, Oliver was an avid golfer who spent countless hours on the course with a close-knit group of lifelong friends. Their shared love for the game took them on winter golf trips that became cherished traditions. He also enjoyed playing cards – especially when there was betting involved – and had an enduring fascination with the stock market, often watching it closely throughout the day.
Oliver found joy in simple pleasures: action movies, old westerns, chocolate-covered peanuts, and strawberry pie were among his favorites. His enthusiasm for good food was known among those who knew him best.
Faith played an important role throughout Oliver’s life, He and Ruth Ann worshiped at Eastminster Presbyterian Church for many years before joining Chapel Hill Fellowship under Reverend Jeff Gannon in 2000. The church community – and especially the Gannon family – became an integral part of their spiritual journey.
Oliver is survived by his beloved son Jeffrey Burton; nephews Dan Burton (Terri) and David Burton (Cathy); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews who will remember him fondly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings John Burton, Dorothy Pritz, Bud Burton, Mildred Graham, Wilma Bjorklund, Alvin Burton, Wanda Mosher, Robert Burton; and his cherished wife Ruth Ann.
May Oliver’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire those whose lives he touched with kindness and quiet strength.
