Parker Irwin

June 16, 1936 — February 21, 2017

Irwin, Parker Thomas “Tom”, Age 80, retired funeral director, died Feb. 21, 2017, from his journey with dementia. Tom was born June 16, 1936 in Winfield, KS to Parker and Helen Irwin. As a young child, the family moved to Enterprise, KS where they established the Irwin Funeral Home. Tom graduated from the Enterprise High School, then earned a BS degree in Education from the Emporia State Teachers College. After teaching one year, he made the choice to become a mortician like his parents and attended mortuary school in Dallas, TX. While there, he met his love, Janice Blair, and following his schooling at Dallas Institute-Gupton Jones, College of Mortuary Science, they returned to Kansas and were married October 15, 1961. Early the following year, they moved to Wichita where Tom joined the staff of Broadway Mortuary, and he retired from there forty-three years later. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law Cary Riffel and Joe Blair. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Janice, son Dr. Scott Irwin, San Antonio, TX, daughter Amy Zerener and husband Mark, Cheney, KS, sister Irene Riffel, Wichita, grandsons Bryce Zerener, Oklahoma City, Brock Zerener, Kansas City, nephew Cory Riffel, Wichita, nieces Shawn Filippi, Portland, OR, Stephanie Ridder, Trophy Club, TX, Jennifer Blair, Wichita, great-nephews and nieces and many wonderful friends. Visitation 6-8:00pm, Friday, Funeral Service 1:30pm, Saturday both at Broadway Mortuary. Burial will follow at Kensington Gardens.
