Sammie Lou Stamps

Sammie Lou Stamps, 85, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, went home to be with the Lord on February 16, 2024.  Sammie passed away at home, surrounded by her family, following a year-long battle with leukemia.

Sammie grew up in Henryetta, Oklahoma.   Following high school, she went to nursing school in Tulsa.  After graduating as an RN in 1959, she met and married her lifelong husband and partner, Phil on December 22, 1961. They moved to El Paso and Fort Campbell, Kentucky as Phil completed his pathology residency and commitment to the army. Upon completion of this, they moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1970. During this time, Sammie had 5 children in 8 years.  In 1982, the family moved to Wichita, Kansas and have resided there until this day.

Sammie was an active member of Calvary United Methodist Church for many years, working in VBS, playing hand bells, quilting and knitting prayer shawls to be given to those who needed encouragement.

She loved going with her family to Table Rock Lake/Branson every fall. She especially enjoyed Silver Dollar City and Mutton Hollow where she enjoyed the arts and crafts and visiting with the artisans. She grew to love the dulcimer so much while going there that she bought a dulcimer and learned to play it.

Sammie played the piano and enjoyed quilting, crochet, knitting, sewing and making intricate beaded jewelry. She was the do-it-yourself queen. If a shower needed regrouted or a faucet was dripping, she figured out how to take care of it.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mitford and Elizabeth Jack, and brother, William Jack. She is survived by her husband of 62-years, Phil; sons, Greg Stamps (Terri) and Gary Stamps (Stacey); daughters Lisa Mitchell, Julie Johnston (Mark) and Dana Stamps.  She was also blessed to have 10 grandchildren: Garrett Mitchell, Rebecca (Zach) Drake, Ryan (Jacquie) Stamps, Alexandra (Mason) McDowell, Anna (Trey) Farnan, Silas Stamps, Zachary Johnston, Sam (Amanda) Johnston, Kaitlin (Matt) DeVoe, and Makenna Johnston and four great grandchildren, Caroline Drake, Julia Drake, Adeline Drake, and Archibald McDowell.

In addition to her faith and family, Sammie was known for her love of all animals, especially dogs. In the years after her children grew up, her dogs became her children. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Kansas Humane Society.

Services celebrating Sammie’s life will be held at 10:30am on Wednesday, February 21, at Cozine Life Events Center in Wichita, Kansas.
