Sonja Louise Seemann was born to Louis and Christine Seemann on December 30, 1945 and passed on May 3, 2025. She was raised in the north central Kansas community of Kensington and received her early education there as well as an introduction to the Lutheran faith which influenced her throughout her life.
Sonja received higher education at Fort Hays State, Colorado Women’s College, the University of Colorado, the University of Kansas and Wichita State University. She was employed in the field of education for over forty years as a teacher, a reading specialist, and a principal.
She was able to travel extensively throughout her lifetime, which was so rewarding to her as a lifelong learner, and she visited Europe, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Australia. Being highly interested and well-read in history, particularly the Civil War, some of her fondest memories were visiting Civil War sites. Several of her much-loved dogs even received names of Civil War generals!
Even though Sonja never had her own children, she was always very close to her niece Christi and her nephews Brian, Jake, Philip and John. Later on, she also grew close to her brother Rod’s second family, including children Joshua, Leah, Jarrett and Cate and their families. Sonja’s parents and older brother Siegfried preceded her in death. She is survived by her brother Rod and his wife Ellie, sister-in-law Susan, and her wonderful nieces and nephews. She leaves behind many good friends, respected colleagues she worked with, and families and children whose lives she touched.
Perhaps one of the most memorable touchstones she lived by was “It’s a great life, if you don’t weaken!” She would like to be remembered for that.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her honor to the Wichita Animal Action League (waalrescue.org), the Kansas Humane Society, (kshumane.org), or another animal rescue organization of your choice.
Though we mourn her leaving us, we remember her with gratitude and inspiration for the gift of her life and the profound impact she had on us. Rest in peace, dear one!
