Tom Gillan

Thomas George Gillan Jr. was born September 3, 1987, in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father affectionately called him T.J. (short for Tom Jr.), a nickname used by family; but to his friends, he was simply Tom. When Tom was eight years old, his father passed away. Even now, his mother is grateful for the village of family and friends who quietly assembled to help guide him through most of his youth.

As Tom grew older, he enjoyed everything and anything outdoors. He joined Venture Crew Scouting and became an experienced hiker, camper, and canoeist. His favorite place to be during any season was at The Blossoming Acres Farm in his community. Never shy about asking for seconds or trying some freshly-baked goods at the farm, Tom’s stature grew. He helped with planting, harvesting, and attending farmer’s markets with the owners, and his solid work ethic was recognized as a gift.

When Tom entered the Air Force in 2007, the gentle giant of a young man became known as Airman Gillan. He worked his way through the ranks, achieving Technical Sergeant. Tom tackled every role he was assigned and never backed down from a challenge, no matter the size. He was also the kind of person people naturally gravitated toward. His presence, empathy, and insight made TSgt Gillan a natural leader and a grounding force for those around him.

While stationed at McConnell AFB, Tom started a solo tree-trimming business. Appropriately named Lumberjack Toms Tree Removal, the business was growing, and Tom often brought along fellow Airmen to earn some extra cash or for something productive to do. He wasn’t just giving them a job, though; he was mentoring them, inspiring them to work harder and ultimately help others. He always went out of his way to lift people up. What truly defined Tom was his quiet mentorship and genuine care for others. He dedicated his free time to Habitat for Humanity, clearing brush and trees to build a better community for those in need. Tom took care of others, often before himself, and he did it without expecting anything in return.

A big man with a big heart, Tom’s smile would light up a room. He found purpose and joy in being a father figure to Ryan Raymond. And the love of his life, Jessica Mies, gave him a greater purpose to provide for her and their future together. He brought light and happiness to everyone around him, especially his fiancee, who loved him deeply and will carry his memories with her every day. Tom’s passing left a lumberjack-sized hole in our hearts. While the world is worse off for losing him, we are better off for having known him. Loved beyond measure, he will be missed beyond words.
