Velma "Jean" Spalding

August 5, 1928 — March 18, 2023

Velma "Jean" Spalding

Velma “Jean” Spalding, age 94, passed from this life to heaven on March 18, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband Leland Earl Spalding, her brother Robert Holland and by her parents, William and Mabel Holland.

She is survived by her daughters Rhonda (Jeff) Turner and Deanna Buford of Wichita, Kansas; brother Larry (Charlotte) Holland of Sublette Kansas; grandchildren Brice (Myra) Turner of Wichita, Kansas, Krista Turner (Craig Scholes) of Wichita, Kansas,  Troy (Amanda) Buford of Weatherford, Texas, and Melissa (Greg) Haudek of Charleston, South Carolina;  great grandchildren Ethan Lee Turner, Evan Lewis Turner, Asher Leland Buford, Levi Andrew Turner, Avery Lynn Turner, Hayven Jean Buford, Eleanor Grace Scholes, and River Alexander Scholes.

Jean was born August 5, 1928 in Attica, Kansas and learned a strong work ethic growing up on a farm.  She married and spent the next 67 years with the love of her life Lee Spalding.  For over twenty years, Jean worked as the budget analyst for the Wichita Public School System in addition to working as a very involved leader at Weight Watchers where she enjoyed encouraging and coaching others.

Jean enjoyed life with exuberance, showering her enthusiasm and joy on her family, friends, colleagues, and even to those she had just met.  Jean made friends everywhere she went and never wanted to miss an opportunity to be with people, staying involved in Sunday School, choir, and women’s groups at Central Christian Church.  Her many interests included garden, square dance, depression glass, bridge, and book groups and clubs and she was an avid Wichita State University basketball fan and loved attending games.

Through her long life, Jean was blessed with a sharp mind and never let changing times and technological developments pass her by.  Her grandchildren especially loved being able to text with her regularly. She often said, “I love my family so much!  My grandkids and great grandkids are my biggest joy.”  Most of all, Jean was a woman who bestowed the fruits of her strong faith in others.

Celebrations for Jean’s life will be held at Central Christian Church Chapel, 2900 N. Rock Rd, Wichita, KS with a visitation on Friday, March 24, 5:00-7:00 pm and a memorial service Saturday, March 25 at 10:30 am.  Burial will follow at Attica, KS cemetery at 3:00 p.m.  Consider wearing colorful attire in Jean’s honor.
