Wanda Mae Nicholas

Wanda Mae Nicholas (née Simmons) passed away on August 19, 2026, in Wichita, Kansas, bringing to a close a remarkable life of 96 years. Born on February 15, 1930, in Billings, Oklahoma, to Ralph and Mamie Simmons.

From a young age, Wanda embraced life with a positive spirit and perseverance. Graduating from Wichita East High School, she continued to make Wichita her home her entire adult life.

Wanda devoted over 44 years to Beech Aircraft Corporation/Raytheon Aircraft Company, mostly as an Executive Secretary, lending her keen organizational skills and professionalism to everyone she encountered. She began in 1953 as a typist and quickly advanced to the perfect job for her. Her work was not just a profession, but a deep source of pride, and she fostered lasting friendships during her tenure. Wanda’s career achievements were matched only by the dedication and loyalty she displayed toward those she worked with.

Beyond her professional life, particularly during retirement, Wanda had several interests and hobbies. She was an avid reader whose love of books kept her mind sharp; she enjoyed playing cards and never missed an opportunity to gather with her cherished social groups, including Welcome Wagon, Sunflower Friends group and various project groups at her church.

Travel was another joy in Wanda’s journey. She continued to travel well into her 90’s, including transatlantic cruises on the Queen Mary. One of her most cherished trips was one to Turkey.

Wanda possessed a gift for hospitality and warmth—her culinary talents were well known. She was an excellent cook who set a beautiful table, especially for holidays.

She is survived by her daughter Paula Downing and her son-in-law Barry Downing. Wanda also leaves behind her 4 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, beloved sources of pride and joy whose lives she touched profoundly.

Wanda is reunited in peace with her two brothers, Dale Simmons and Dean Simmons, as well as her beloved son, Michael D. O'Grady. Their memories linger sweetly in the hearts of those who knew and loved Wanda.

Wanda Mae Nicholas will be remembered for her vibrant personality, her passion for living, and her style and fashion that she carried throughout her entire adult life.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Larksfield Place on Monday, August 31, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Wanda’s name at University Congregational Church, 9209 E. 29th St. N., Wichita, KS 67226.
